An Insider's Look at Baltimore's Best Restaurants

Have you heard the news? Restaurant guide, Zagat, named Baltimore its 2nd Top Food City of 2015. The article states…."Baltimore won its first James Beard Foundation Award this year. Well, Spike Gjerde won the Best Chef: Mid Atlantic category, but a win for a hometown boy is a win for the town too. (Cindy Wolf of Charleston restaurant was also nominated.)."

Let's take a closer look at the restaurants in Baltimore, Maryland that received recognition.

Woodberry Kitchen

The Washington Post called the restaurant "the Chez Panisse of our region." Co-owner, Spike Gjerde, showcases the Bay's finest gifts, from Tilghman Island crabs to farmstead cheeses from Boyds Maryland. Gjerde is committed to sustainability, which can also be seen at his other restaurants, Parts & Labor (housed in a former auto repair shop and meat lover's nirvana), and Artifact coffee shop.

Mount Vernon Marketplace

This is Baltimore's newest foodie destination. Annapolis coffee company Ceremony opened a new location in this haute food hall. It also includes The Local Oyster stall, craft-beer counter at Taps Fill Station and charcuterie from Cultered, as well as other artisanal goods.

Aggio

At this "notably different" Italian at Downtown's Power Plant Live, Top Chef runner-up Bryan Voltaggio offers an "innovative" modern menu full of "bold flavors" and "attractively plated" dishes; tabs can "add up very quickly" and the "stark", "industrial" decor isn't for everyone, but "poised" service ensures "all the right ingredients for a classy meal out."

Azumi

"Japanese fine dining" awaits at this "hot spot" in Harbor East's Four Seasons Hotel, where "fabulous" sushi and more arrives via an "attentive" team and there's a "sommelier to guide you" through the primo sake selection; boasting "beautiful views" of the water from outdoor tables, the atmosphere is "NYC sophisticated" with prices to match – but "if it's in your budget, it's worth it."
