A museum trip is always a fun experience, and many museums are hosting special events and seasonal exhibits right now. So find a day in January and take the whole family to one or more of these museums and see what's new and exciting near Harrisburg homes for sale!
The whole State Museum of Pennsylvania is seasonal at the moment. This compendium of PA's history and culture is closing in August for renovations and upgrades until 2029. In the meantime, however, there's plenty to experience, including several special exhibits:
Plus permanent exhibits like Village Square—a life-size replica of a 19th-century Pennsylvania street. Open Wednesday through Sunday, admission is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, and $5 for children under 12.
The newest exhibit at Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts is The Glow Zone. Running now through February 14th, it's a hands-on experience that demonstrates the properties and perception of ultraviolet light. High school students interested in medicine should also check out Surgery Live!, a virtual glimpse into a real operating room, to see surgical procedures in real time.
Do you want to learn how to dance the way they did in the 1860s? Then head to The National Civil War Museum. They're offering free Civil War Dance Classes, selected Sundays in January, February, and March, from 2-4 p.m. Be sure to register in advance for the class you want, and you'll receive a Civil War Dance Manual. Plus, the museum has plenty of other great exhibits throughout the year, such as:
Museum admission is $18 for adults, $17 for seniors, and $16 for children under 18—or get a Family Pass for $68.
If you like chocolate, you have to check out The Hershey Story Museum. Located in the birthplace of the famous candy company, near Hershey homes for sale, it's a comprehensive look at Milton Hershey and how his dream came to be. They're currently running a temporary, special exhibit on the life of William Dearden, Hershey's protégé, who saved the company from ruin and helped make it a household name. And of course, the museum also has plenty of hands-on exhibits, like the Chocolate Lab, where you can make (and taste) your own chocolate bars.
There are some great upcoming events at Lancaster Science Factory for kids interested in science. In January, check out Zoo America Presents: Animals in Winter and see firsthand how different animals handle the cold, from migration to hibernation.
