Baltimore is home to some truly beautiful libraries, where you can find vast collections, troves of research materials, and a wide range of special events throughout the year. George Peabody Library – 17 E. Mount Vernon Place, Baltimore, MD 21202
Located on the Johns Hopkins University campus, the George Peabody Library is one of Baltimore's most historic libraries, having first opened its doors in 1878. Today, it's home to a vast collection of over 300,000 volumes, many of which date to the 19th century. While the collections here are outstanding, the architecture is also well worth a visit on its own, featuring soaring 61-foot ceilings with skylight, ornate, cast-iron décor throughout, and five levels packed with rare books.
Enoch Pratt Free Library – 400 Cathedral St., Baltimore, MD 21201
The Enoch Pratt Free Library is an excellent choice if you're looking for a local library with tons of different events, classes, talks, and activities on the schedule. They offer fun activities for all ages, including story time, games, crafting, and homework help for kids of all ages. Teens will find opportunities to discover new books, learn about creative writing, connect with friends, and meet professionals in a variety of creative fields. Adults can find career assistance, research opportunities, and even fitness programs.
Enoch Pratt Southeast Anchor Branch – 3601 Eastern Ave., Baltimore, MD 21224
The Enoch Pratt Southeast Anchor Branch is the newest library on our list and was the first new library to be constructed in Baltimore in 30 years when it first opened its doors on May 14, 2007. Its collections have grown quite a bit since those days, and the library now features more than 80,000 volumes spread over more than 27,000 square feet of space. If you're looking for a quiet, relaxing place to read, this library also has a wonderful reading garden.
Evergreen Museum & Library – 4545 N. Charles St., Baltimore, MD 21210
If you love touring historic buildings and learning more about local history, you won't want to miss the chance to visit the Evergreen Museum & Library. Housed in a gorgeous Gilded Age mansion, this facility is part library, part museum. The collections here include many rare books, as well as manuscripts, art, and artifacts. Tours are available, allowing you to explore the historic mansion and all that the library has to offer.
H. Furlong Baldwin Library – 610 Park Ave., Baltimore, MD 21201
The H. Furlong Baldwin Library is located in the Maryland Center for History and Culture, and it's the place to be when you're visiting the library for research purposes. The archives here are vast, with tons of data on Baltimore's history, local families, Maryland culture, and a wide range of scholarly topics. In addition to all of the items in the main Reading Room, the Special Collections include many rare, hard-to-find texts that you won't find at other libraries.
