"Once upon a midnight dreary," iconic American author Edgar Allan Poe sat writing at his desk in a small duplex in Baltimore. Spend the month of Halloween exploring Poe's fascinating life through these events and activities recommended by our real estate agents.
Edgar Allan Poe spent only a handful of his 40 years in Baltimore, but that time was instrumental in creating his legend. At one point, Poe actually stopped claiming his actual birthplace of Boston and called Baltimore his hometown.
In 1829, Poe spent a brief period living with relatives in Baltimore, where the family's roots extended back to 1755. Poe returned to the home in 1832 and stayed until 1835, during which time he shifted from poetry to short stories, the literary form for which he's most widely known.
Tragically, Poe's death was as mysterious as many of his works. Though he later lived in Philadelphia, New York, and Richmond, Poe was found lying in a Fells Point gutter on October 3, 1849. After four days of delirium, Poe passed away on October 7, most likely from the effects of alcoholism.
