Whether you have pets or simply love them, there's an exciting week coming up that you'll want to celebrate. The first week in May is National Pet Week, the perfect opportunity to celebrate the connection between humans and our favorite animals. We recommend celebrating by taking your dog to one of these destinations around Harrisburg. Our real estate agents sure do know all the top spots for pets!
- Conewago Recreation Trail - 2385 N. Market St., Elizabethtown, PA 17022
If you're in the mood to take your dog for a walk in nature, the Conewago Recreation Trail is the place to go. This 5-mile trail is built over an old railroad bed, passing by beautiful fields and gorgeous woodlands.
Most of this trail is made from crushed gravel, but there is a paved section near Mill Road. Dogs must be kept on a leash while walking, and carry-in/carry-out rules apply. After your walk, consider looking at some Elizabethtown homes for sale nearby.
- Stony Valley Railroad Grade - 2680 Stony Valley Railroad Grade, Dauphin, PA 17018
If you happen to be in the area looking at Dauphin homes for sale, stop for a walk at the nearby Stony Valley Railroad Grade. This 19.7-mile trail is perfect for a long walk with your energetic dog. The trail passes several creeks and ponds. There are a few wooded sections and plenty of fields.
Horses and mountain bikes are permitted on this trail, too, so make sure your dog is adapted to seeing them. The trail is mostly gravel with some sections of packed dirt.
- Wildwood Park - 100 Wildwood Way, Harrisburg, PA, US, 17110
Wildwood Park is the perfect place to enjoy a walk with your dog and a picnic with the family. The park has several picnic shelters, a children's discovery area, and a dedicated bird viewing area.
As far as the trails go, there are several options. The Towpath Trail stretches for a mile along the east side of the lake. You'll see wetland birds and maybe even some turtles. Fox Run Trail is a short, 0.25-mile trail that stretches over a bog. Then, there's Wildwood Way Trail, a 2.1-mile paved trail that offers views of the lake.
- Boyd Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area - 401 Fishing Creek Valley Rd., Harrisburg, PA, 17112
Spend an afternoon at Boyd Big Tree Preserve Conservation Area, one of the most beautiful parks in Harrisburg. This 1,025-acre natural area backs up against Blue Mountain. Birds are abundant, including warblers, and wildflowers dot the landscape throughout the summer.
There are a few marked trails throughout the conservation area, but you can also walk or play fetch with your dog in some of the open fields. If you have time, stop and see some Harrisburg homes for sale afterward.
- Fort Hunter Mansion and Park - 5300 N. Front St., Harrisburg, PA, US, 17110
While dogs can't tour the mansion, they will enjoy a walk around Fort Hunter Mansion and Park. There are more than 40 acres of open land to enjoy. You can wander along the water, admire the trees, and even identify some water birds.
Dogs must stay on a leash at this park, but there are also a lot of great spots to take photos.
Regardless of where you celebrate, we hope you enjoy National Pet Week. Contact us if you're still looking for a place to call home. We'd love to help you and your dog find the perfect abode.
