Our real estate agents have the details on five of the best places for a family bike ride in Dutch Country.
- Northwest Lancaster County River Trail – Northwestern Lancaster County, PA
One of the longest trails near Lancaster homes for sale, the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail is about 14 miles long and connects with five different local municipalities. The trail was built along the historic Pennsylvania Mainline Canal route, with plenty of historic industrial sites to visit and interpret as a family along the way. There are some relatively flat sections of the trail that make it suitable for families with young children, and other parts of the trail are still under development to extend the length in future years.
- Conestoga Greenway Trail – 1050 Lockford Rd., Lancaster, PA 17602
Running along the Conestoga River, the Conestoga Greenway Trail is 1.3 miles long and features tons of beautiful waterfront scenery. You can pick up the paved trail at Lancaster County Central Park and enjoy a quick, peaceful family ride with scenic views. This trail is the first part of a long-term plan to develop an extensive system of nature trails around the Conestoga River.
- Conewago Recreation Trail – One Mile West of Elizabethtown, on Route 230
Located a short ride from Elizabethtown homes for sale, the Conewago Recreation Trail is a flat, paved trail ideal for a family bike ride. The trail runs for 5.1 miles along the former path of the Cornwall-Lebanon rail line, with views of Conewago Creek and some beautiful farmlands and forests. It's part of the large Rail Trail system in Dutch Country and connects to the Lebanon Valley Rail Trail.
- Lancaster Junction Recreation Trail – Lancaster Junction and Route 283
The Lancaster Junction Recreation Trail is another trail located along the path of an old railroad, which travels for 2.3 miles between the town of Lancaster Junction and Route 283. With leveled, graded surfaces and a relatively short length, this is another good trail to consider when bringing the youngest members of the family along for the ride. There's plenty of peaceful farmland to explore along the way, and part of the trail also runs along Chickies Creek.
- Enola Low Grade Rail Trail – Colemanville Church Road, Conestoga Township, PA 17516
The longest trail on our list at over 27 miles, the Enola Low Grade Rail Trail runs through multiple townships and features a variety of terrain that makes it more challenging than some of the other trails that we've mentioned. Due to the varying terrain, this trail is recommended for more experienced riders, but the views of the Susquehanna River are well worth the effort. One of many trail entry points is located at the end of Colemanville Church Road, where you will find convenient parking spaces and an information kiosk where you can learn more about the trail.
