Dining out is a nice break from cooking, but it's even better when the meal includes a genuinely entertaining experience. Head to one of these unique restaurants near Baltimore homes for sale where food is just part of the fun.
- Papermoon Diner - 227 W. 29th St., Baltimore 21211
Perhaps the best description of Papermoon Diner comes in their own words: "an eccentric, eclectic, technicolor dining experience." The vivid hues and funky art of Papermoon's exterior are just a hint of what's to come inside, where virtually every square inch is crammed full of toys, posters and retro items like Pez dispensers. Dishes such as Spicy Buffalo Tofu Wrap and Oink Oink Quesadilla satisfy vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. Hours are 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. daily except Tuesday, when the diner is closed.
- Gypsy's Truckstaurant - 3515 Clipper Mill Rd., Baltimore 21211
What do you get when you combine the comfort of a beloved sit-down restaurant with the edgy street food of a food truck? Owners Annmarie Langton and Tom Looney took the best of their Helen's Garden Restaurant and Gypsy Queen Food Truck to come up with Gypsy's Truckstaurant. The main attraction is their signature waffle cone stuffed with a crab cake, Old Bay garlic fries, and a chipotle aioli sauce, but the rest of the menu is a delightful mash-up of international flavors. Gypsy's is open 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. - 10 p.m. Friday, noon - 10 p.m. Saturday, and 3 p.m. - 9 p.m. Sunday.
- Annabel Lee Tavern - 601 S. Clinton St., Baltimore 21224
Annabel Lee Tavern is a tribute to native son Edgar Allan Poe, whose works put Baltimore on the literary map. The tavern's name is taken from Poe's last known work, a typically moody and mysterious poem published after his death. Annabel Lee's "upscale comfort food" menu features Baltimore-centric dishes, such as the Annapolis sandwich with grilled chicken, crab dip, and Cheddar cheese. Selections from the Poe-themed drink list include Masque of the Red Death, Evening Star, and, of course, The Raven. Hours are 4 p.m. - 2 a.m. weekdays (1 a.m. closing Tuesday), noon - 2 a.m. Saturday, and noon - midnight Sunday.
- Rocket to Venus - 3360 Chestnut Ave., Baltimore 21211
Its name may be out of this world, but Rocket to Venus grew out of a quirky story from Baltimore's past in which three men built a rocket in a Morling Avenue garage in 1928. Details like spaceship portholes, copper tubing, and black Naugahyde give the restaurant a vintage sci-fi feel. The menu of bar food favorites like burgers and chicken wings is complemented with a wide-ranging drink list of beer, wine, and signature cocktails. Rocket to Venus is open 5 p.m. - 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, noon - midnight Friday and Saturday, and 4 p.m. - 11 p.m. Sunday. Brunch is served noon - 3:30 p.m. on weekends.
- R House - 301 W. 29th St., Baltimore 21211
So you're hungry but you don't know what you want? With 10 stalls serving a variety of cuisines, R House has you covered. Options include Korean BBQ, poke and sushi, hot dogs and burgers, and Mediterranean street food. A rotating pop-up gives chefs a chance to try out new items, and weekend brunch incorporates dishes from all 10 stalls. Breakfast at R Place is served 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. daily. Lunch and dinner hours are 11:30 a.m. - 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11:30 a.m. - 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
