Historic Ships in Baltimore-BHHS Homesale Realty

When our real estate agents talk to their clients about why they love the city of Baltimore, the Inner Harbor always makes it to the top of the list. Located on one of the country's oldest seaports, the Inner Harbor features a number of options for shopping, dining, and family entertainment.

When you're ready to take a break from looking at Baltimore homes for sale, we highly recommend that you see for yourself what this popular destination has to offer. While you're there, set aside a few hours to check out the Historic Ships in Baltimore. This exhibit is one of the largest and most impressive collections of military ships worldwide. Here are some of the interesting things you can expect to see while you're there.

  1. Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse (Pier 5)

The Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse is one of the oldest lighthouses still in existence. When you visit, you'll be greeted by a display of information about how this relocated lighthouse was built, as well as interesting facts about other lighthouses around Chesapeake Bay.

Don't miss your chance to climb up inside the lighthouse and take in the stunning views of the Baltimore Harbor.
  1. USCGC Taney (Pier 5)

While you're at Pier 5, you'll also want to stop by the USCGC Tanney. The tour of this US Coast Guard cutter allows you to view the deck, officers quarters, mess deck, and berthing areas, as well as go into the fantail.

This ship, which was decommissioned in 1986, was preserved in almost the exact condition as the Coast Guard left her. This allows you to get a great idea of what life on this vessel was really like.
  1. USS Constellation (Pier 1)

Visiting the USS Constellation is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the historic ship experience. There are four decks to explore and uniformed crew who will help make your adventure even more memorable.

Check out the artifacts and personal belongings of the original crew members and imagine what life was like aboard this ship. Also make sure you review the daily plan, which will tell you when you can see exciting demonstrations like the Powder Monkey Tours and live firing of the Parrott rifle.
  1. USS Torsk (Pier 3)

Touring the USS Torsk is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. As you tour this military submarine from stern to bow, you'll be blown away by the fact that it once housed 80 sailors at a time! Tours include stops in the torpedo room, engine room, navigation station, operation station, crew berthing areas, and the crew mess.

Visitors who happen to be there at the right time might even get a chance to talk to a former crew member!
  1. LV116 Chesapeake (Pier 3)

When it was designed in 1930, the LV116 Chesapeake was one of the most capable and modern ships of her time. Still, sailing aboard this ship was not for the faint of heart. Visitors to this ship will also enjoy the "Sailor's Canine Companion" display.

The hours of operation for Historic Ships in Baltimore vary depending on the time of year, so make sure you check the website before heading out on your adventure. After you're done with the tour, plan to stick around and enjoy dinner, live music, and a beautiful sunset.
