4 Unique Sighting Around Baltimore
- Phoenix Shot Tower, 801 E. Fayette St., Baltimore, MD 21201
Whether you know it as the Old Baltimore Shot Tower or as the Phoenix Shot Tower, there's no denying that this massive tower will immediately catch your eye as you drive through Jonestown. Once the tallest structure in the U.S., this National Historic Landmark was a manufacturing facility for lead shot balls for muskets for most of the 1800s. As molten lead was dropped through sieves at the top of the tower, it would form into round balls and cool in the water below. Now the property of the city, you can tour this facility on Saturdays and Sundays.
- Vote Against Prohibition Sign, 1698 Shakespeare St., Baltimore, MD 21231
A trip through Fell's Point isn't complete without a look at the "Vote Against Prohibition" sign at the corner of South Broadway and Shakespeare. In the Prohibition Era of the 1920s and '30s, the people of Baltimore fought against the anti-alcohol laws imposed by the federal government. Weathered over the last century, this faded sign remains as a reminder of Baltimore's history during the Prohibition Era as a popular place to find bootlegged liquor.
- Nipper the RCA Dog Statue, 200 W. Centre St., Baltimore, MD 21201
There are dozens of reasons to head to the Maryland Historical Society, but perhaps the cutest is Nipper the Dog. Once located atop the RCA building, this statue had many homes throughout the city before eventually finding its place in the Mount Vernon neighborhood. The Nipper statue was based on a painting of a real dog of the same name. Named for nipping at the backs of people's legs, Nipper's portrait and statue display him tilting his head to hear the noise coming from the phonograph. Nipper also has a few siblings on display in New York, New Jersey, and even England.
- Frank Zappa Bust, 3601 Eastern Ave., Baltimore, MD 21224
A tribute to the iconic musician hailing from Baltimore, the Frank Zappa Bust is located at the Southeast Anchor Library in Highlandtown. This work of art was created by a Lithuanian sculptor named Konstantinas Bogdanas, who was commissioned by a fan club of Zappa fans in the Lithuanian town of Vilnius. It became so popular that the fans decided to send a bust for the people of Baltimore to enjoy as well.
