Cylburn Arboretum is the largest public garden in Baltimore City featuring 3-1/2 miles of nature trails and wetland areas and the Vollmer Visitor Center and historical Cylburn Mansion.
Nature and history intertwine in this expansive estate that includes more than 20 gardens and nature preserve. Cylburn Arboretum began in 1863 as the private home of Jesse Tyson, businessman and Baltimore Chrome Works Company president, to be used as a summer home to be shared with his mother. Construction was completed in 1888. Tyson married Edyth Jones, and the couple resided in the home together until Tyson's passing. Mrs. Tyson continued to live there until her passing in 1942 at which time Baltimore City purchased the property.
The estate became known as Cylburn Wildflower Preserve and Garden Center in 1954 featuring trails and gardens designed by volunteers. Its name was once again changed in 1984 to Cylburn Arboretum and covers 207 acres of land with horticultural and historic sites.
