Our REALTORS® are known for going the extra mile to understand all of the perks and amenities of the neighborhoods they serve. When it comes to York homes for sale, that is quite literal. The York area has dozens of great trails, and we've selected a favorite.
That's right: We've hit the trail to explore York County Heritage Rail Trail!
If you're an avid hiker, you might already know about rail trails, hiking paths converted from disused railroad tracks. What few people know, however, is that there are also Rails with Trails (RWT): Hiking trails that run beside an active railroad track.
You'll find these in Pennsylvania and all over the region, but York has one of the best of all.
Wending through some of the most beautiful terrains of York County for a full 21 miles, York County Heritage Rail Trail was opened in 1999. If you're feeling adventurous, you can even follow this trail all the way to where it connects with Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail in Maryland.
York County Heritage Rail Trail is truly a part of the state's history. Work on it began all the way back in 1992 when two local Eagle Scouts started to prepare the first mile and a half as part of their capstone project. They earned their badges and did the area a great service!
The trail itself is 10 feet wide and is made from crushed limestone, making it an easy surface for hikers and visitors of all skill levels to use. In fact, the Rail Trail is considered accessible and ADA-compliant. Hiking, bicycling, running, and horseback riding are all commonplace.
As with many such trails throughout the area, visitors are welcome all year round.
That makes it perfect for jogging and running in the spring, lovely walks in the fall to see the foliage, and winter enjoyment like skiing and snowshoeing. Official opening hours are 8 a.m. until dusk every day. Benches, picnic tables, and accessible restrooms are sprinkled throughout the length of the trail.
Along your way, you're sure to encounter some great sights.
Recently, visitors have reported spotting a spectacular horse and rider sculpture along the trail near Hanover Junction. The striking appearance conceals the fact that the whole artwork is made up of recycled scrap and other junk. Wow!
You'll also find the New Freedom Trail Station, restored to its appearance circa 1940, and the Hanover Junction, which looks almost as it did all the way back in 1863. Of course, you should always be alert while using the trail – today's trains are still going about their business!
York offers a wide range of different homes to meet all sorts of needs. No matter whether you want to buy or sell a home, BHHS Homesale Realty provides you with the local expertise that makes it easier.
