Don't let its name put you off. A mud sale isn't selling mud at all, any more than a garage sale is selling a garage or a yard sale is selling a yard. Rather, the term came into use because the sales are typically held in late winter and early spring, when all of the season's snows are melting... creating mud.
Mud sales are more community-focused than a garage sale or a yard sale, however. The point isn't to sell off your unwanted things, but to come together as a community and raise money for volunteer firefighter programs. The result is a fun-filled day that's more like a cross between a country fair and a church bazaar.
