When you walk down the streets of Baltimore City's Hampden neighborhood during the Christmas season, you'll understand why both locals and newcomers consider this Maryland community a REAL holiday miracle. Seventy-one years and going strong, Hampden's Miracle on 34th Street holiday lighting tradition joins family, friends, neighbors, and visitors to witness the unofficial start of Baltimore's holiday season.
Dubbed as the 3rd Most Outrageous Light Display in the US, the 700 block of West 34th Street in Hampden quickly fills with thousands of visitors (some from the region and some from across the globe) from Thanksgiving to early January to witness the transformation of this Baltimore neighborhood into a winter wonderland. Our REALTORS® in Baltimore are long-time fans of Hampden and all of its fun and funky events, but perhaps none quite as much as Miracle on 34th Street.
The holiday lighting tradition began in 1947 when a teenager, Bob Hosier, placed a single strand of holiday lights on a tree in his front yard. Over the years that followed, neighbors joined in with their own illuminated displays. Eventually, over-the-top holiday home decorating—including Christmas trees made from hubcaps and even records--became a block long Christmas tradition worthy of the movie title by the same name, Miracle on 34th Street.
Most Hampden homeowners living between Chestnut Avenue and Keswick Road participate in the display. While no one is obligated to participate, longtime locals are ready to share decorations with new neighbors.
If you happen to be in the area touring Hampden homes for sale, stick around until the lights come on--you won't be disappointed. You'll see far more than a few twinkling strands of lights. You'll stare in wonder at two-story homes decorated top-to-bottom with Santas, wreaths, and other Christmas standards. You'll see some not-so-standard decorations too, such as a giant crab and a six-foot hubcap tree.

Hampden's small-town atmosphere and proximity to Downtown Baltimore make 21211 one of the most desirable zip codes in the area to live. You'll find beautiful, elegant homes that meet your highest expectations. When you visit during the holidays, you'll enjoy colorful displays, fun traditions and activities, and lots of holiday excitement. Throughout Baltimore, homes, businesses, and neighborhoods put on their holiday best.
If you're considering relocating to the area, you'll find a city immersed in shopping, dining, and holiday excitement. If you want to jumpstart your holiday spirit, we recommend that you take a stroll down 34th Street in Hampden to see how are residents celebrate the holidays. From now until the end of the Christmas season, you'll have a chance to experience the Miracle on 34th Street.
