Lancaster, PA is filled with history. It is one of the oldest inland towns in the US. In 1777, it was capital of the United States for one day. It also served as the capital of Pennsylvania from 1799 to 1812. It's not just the cultural history either—the city has beautiful, historic buildings and homes for residents to explore. One place that draws both locals and tourists is Central Market. In the heart of Amish country, a stunning red brick building holds the oldest farmers' market in the country.
Since 1730, Central Market has been providing locals with a place to gather and find fresh food and other goods. Today, you will find an abundance of items that vary by season. Here's a look at what you may find:
Market hours are Tuesdays and Fridays 6 AM to 4 PM and Saturdays 6 AM to 2 PM.
In addition to retail shopping and a place to grab a bite to eat, you can think of the market as a community gathering place. Whether it's holiday shopping or harvest breakfasts, you'll find a lot going on year-round. Follow Central Market's Facebook and Twitter feeds to keep on top of all the happenings.
Lancaster's Central Market is calling on the community to help keep it going for another 100 years. The building needs a new roof—one that will last longer than the current asphalt replacement. The goal is to raise $1.5 million to go back to the slate roof that worked well enough to last for 100 years.
It's said "Let's meet at the Market," has been a phrase in Lancaster's history for almost 300 years. It's part of what makes living in Lancaster incredible and part of what has landed Lancaster on the list of "best places to live."
