York, PA is already a special place—but when the holidays come around, there is an extra dose of magic. During the end of November and throughout December, there are a multitude of events to get you in the spirit of the season. One favorite event is Light Up York.
Light Up York has become a beloved event in the city, and people of all ages come to celebrate community and the holidays with this big event. Light Up York takes place Friday, December 2nd from 5 to 9 p.m. in the downtown area.
Each year, the event changes a little, and has become bigger and better with new additions that delight. This year, a live reindeer is available for photo ops. The city will also be sealing the 275th Anniversary Time Capsule. Beyond that, multiple activities will be taking place throughout the downtown area. Get your face painted, drink complimentary hot chocolate, donate gifts to Toys for Tots, watch Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer at the Capitol Theatre, see live music and dance, do crafts, visit with Santa and get a picture, and more. The entertainment is plentiful, and you'll be able to do some of your shopping as well—don't forget your Christmas tree (available at Cherry Lane)! Businesses will stay open late and offer special promotions throughout the evening.
The main event, as usual, is the lighting of the large, 30-foot blue spruce tree. Don't make excuses, parking will be free at city garages during this special event.
Other York Holiday Events

Music and theater are abundant during December. Go see the hilarious musical Elf at the Hershey Theatre, or listen to the popular take on your favorite holiday tunes with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra at the Giant Center. Holiday light lovers can walk the half-mile Christmas Magic trail in York County, which will be decked out in thousands of lights and feature eye-catching animation.
