Summer is upon us, and Lancaster County, PA is an incredible area to get outside and celebrate the sun. A picnic offers friends, families, and couples a way to enjoy the outdoors. It's an opportunity to play, relax, and take full advantage of Lancaster's summer weather. 1. Breezyview Overlook & Chickies Rock County Park – Columbia, PA
Breezyview Overlook is a popular spot in Chickies Rock County Park. The park itself features the overlook trail, numerous vistas, and an interesting and varied topography. The rock the park is named for is massive and towers 100 feet above the York River. Picnicking here will afford you views of farmland, and is perfect for nature lovers who appreciate a walk before its time to eat.
2. East Donegal Township's Riverfront Park – Marietta, PA
Although there are plenty of appealing parks within the township, Riverfront Park stands out as an idyllic picnic spot. You have everything necessary for the quintessential picnic day: River, expanses of grass, and a boat launch. The park is relatively new, and the goal is continued improvements and features like the walking path, reestablished wetlands with boardwalks, and an environmental education center. Summertime is great for packing lunch, taking a paddle, and enjoying this wonderful picnic spot.
3. D. F. Buchmiller Park – Lancaster, PA
Dulon F. Buchmiller donated property to Lancaster City in 1922. Now, it belongs to Lancaster County and is a beautiful resource for residents throughout the area. With 79 acres and several features, picnickers can easily spend a day at the park. Some favorite aspects include pavilions, tennis courts, volleyball, a disc golf course, and a playground. If you haven't played disc golf before, it's a fun and engaging game good for all ages. Make the 18-hole course a highlight of your day.
4. Long's Park – Lancaster, PA
Long's Park is the site of many activities. Here, you'll see an arts and crafts festival, summertime concerts, and more. Go on a day it isn't filled with hundreds of eventgoers and find out why Long's Park is a sweet spot for a picnic. Some of the top features are the play areas, fresh food stands, and the mounted police stables. Although going on a quieter day is nice, it's also fun to go during a musical event. You can eat and drink while listening to local musicians.
5. Lancaster County Central Park – Lancaster, PA
This is the picnic spot for active people. At Lancaster County Central Park you'll be able to skateboard, swim, walk the trails, and visit the environmental center. It's perfect for those who want a picnic, and a day of adventure.
6. Sam Lewis State Park – York, PA
Technically not in Lancaster, Sam Lewis State Park is well worth a mention. It's easily accessible to Lancaster residents and offers a full daytrip of ideas. At this 85-acre park you can fly kites, stargaze during a night picnic, hike the trails, and look at wildlife. The park has long been a favorite in the area—and this summer is the perfect time to find out why.
