Baltimore is well known for its options for delectable food, but few of these options are quite as well known as the Faidley's Seafood Market. Located on North Paca in the Lexington Market, the Faidley's Seafood Market has been serving up fresh seafood since 1886, and has won numerous awards and accolades for its food. In fact, the restaurant is listed in Southern Living's "Off the Eaten Path," and Patricia Schultz named Faidley's Seafood Market as one of the "1,000 Places to See Before You Die." This iconic eating establishment is truly part of the "Best of Baltimore."

It is more than the food that makes Faidley's Seafood Market so important to Baltimore's residents and visitors alike. It is the rich history of the place as well. Faidley's Seafood opened its doors in 1886 when John W. Faidley, Sr. started selling his fresh seafood and crab cakes. Over the years, it has remained a family-run business with Bill and Nancy Devine the descendants of Faidley himself owning the restaurant today.
While all of the food at Faidley's Seafood is excellent, it is the lump crab cakes that have drawn so many to Baltimore's World Famous Lexington Market. The crab cakes have allowed Faidley's to develop Maryland Style Crab Feasts, a community event that has helped build the tourism and economy of the region. People from around the country and even international locations will host Faidley's Maryland Style Crab Feasts, partnering with Faidley's to provide the food. Faidley's has been seen in movies and TV shows as well.
Every day, people travel from around the state and even around the country to visit Faidley's. It's the crab cakes that have gotten so many people interested in Faidley's.
Smithsonian Magazine, for instance, recommends Faidley's to people visiting Baltimore in its "The 20 Most Iconic Food Destinations Across America" list, and specifically names the crab cake sandwich as one of the best you can find anywhere. "Man vs. Food" host, Adam Richman, has also called it one of the best sandwiches in the country. According to Smithsonian, it's the addition of chopped saltines to the mix, added just before frying the crab cake that makes it so special.

Of course, crab cakes are not all that Faidley's serves. Zagat, which gave Faidley's a 26 out of 30 rating, indicates that other favorites are the raw bar, oyster shuckers and no-frills service. And this is true - you won't find any frills at Faidley's, or any chairs either. Baltimore residents enjoy standing up to eat at communal tables, and many feel that the laid-back atmosphere adds to the experience.
If you have not yet tried Faidley's, you owe it to yourself to head to Lexington Market to taste a piece of Baltimore history. If you are considering making the move to Baltimore, consider shopping for a home close to the market so you can enjoy Faidley's on a regular basis.
