Pottsville, PA believes in its community's youth. That is one reason why the Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce in Pottsville has unveiled a new program called the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!). In a recent release, Monica M. Walborn, Events Planning and Coordination Director for the chamber commented that it is their organization's belief that for their local community's future growth, the entrepreneurial spirit of the area's youth needs to be nurtured today.
The goal of the Young Entrepreneurs Academy, or YEA!, is to encourage students to take a path that leads to starting up their own businesses or leading their own social movement. Their belief is that these talented and motivated youngsters will soon be the future of our country and their ideas will help keep the economy robust and thriving.
The YEA! program is based out of New York and has been serving 168 communities across the country for ten years. This is the first year that the program will be available to the children of Pottsville PA, and the excitement is building.
The YEA! program gives kids the tools they need to bring their ideas to reality. They will learn how to operate a business or a social movement, how to develop a business plan, how to manage financing and marketing, and how to sell their products or ideas.
Classes will meet weekly at the Penn State Schuylkill Campus, located at 200 University Drive in Schuylkill Haven. Students will also take occasional field trips for hands-on learning opportunities.
At the end of the session, business plans are presented to YEA! investors who will help finance some of the companies and social movements. Students will also be able to show off their ideas at the annual trade show among other YEA! students and their friends, families, and community leaders.
No prior business experience is necessary, only a strong leadership commitment and the ability to pursue goals independently. Application forms can be downloaded, or picked up from the Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce, located at 1 Progress Circle in Pottsville, PA.
Students must complete the application form, including a short essay, and provide a letter of recommendation from a teacher or community leader. Registration will be ongoing until all the slots are filled, and classes begin in October of 2014. Tuition for the program is $495 per student. For inquiries about scholarships, contact Carol Boyer at the Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce at (570) 622-1942.
