Best of Baltimore

Moving to Hampden Neighborhood in Baltimore

Hampden Best of Baltimore Neighborhoods Baltimore's Hampden neighborhood was originally settled by the workers of the flour and cotton mills along Jones Falls long before it officially became part of Baltimore in the late 1800s. Today, Hampden has been transformed into a trendy, attractive place where artists gather, shoppers stroll The Avenue, and friends and family gather.

Things to Do in Hampden

The Hampden neighborhood is just minutes from the exciting nightlife and after hours entertainment of the Inner Harbor. There's also plenty to keep you busy right at home.

  • Cafe Hon, 1002 W. 36th Street
Enjoy casual meals prepared with all of the old-time love that Baltimore has to offer including freshly shucked oysters every weekend during the spring. Stop in for brunch, lunch, or dinner to enjoy sandwiches like the Reuben or the Fritz, burgers, salads, hand-cut fries, and more. Or, stay late at the Hon Bar enjoying cocktails with friends.

  • Woodberry Kitchen, 2010 Clipper Park Road
Enjoy fresh, local ingredients prepared with care and respect for the environment and sustainability efforts and served in a fresh, upscale-yet-relaxed environment where guests are welcome to linger.

  • Charm City Cakes, 2936 Remington Avenue
Whether you have seen Charm City's creations on television or not, stopping by to view the artistic creations happening will never disappoint. Order a cake for a special occasion or pick up a t-shirt from their store.

  • 16 Tons, 1021 W. 36th Street
Enjoy shopping in this distinct example of the boutique stores that are located in Baltimore's Hampden neighborhood. 16 Tons offers an eclectic, old-fashioned shopping experience for men including a vintage section and timeless wardrobe staples.

Hampden Neighborhood Events

The distinct style and culture that is Hampden is celebrated every June during HonFest, an annual tradition that celebrates the warmth and unique style of the historic working women of Baltimore. The people in the area spend one weekend truly relishing in wild (and lovingly tacky) wardrobes and hairstyles that were popular in the area during the 1960s. There is food and music to enjoy although people-watching is usually the primary activity.

Another notorious festival, Hampdenfest, is held every year in September and is another opportunity for the community to get together and enjoy the unique vibe of Hampden. Along with live music, local art, and microbrew beer, people can enjoy such competitions like the Regional Beard and Mustache Competition and the Toilet Bowl Race.

Living in Baltimore's Hampden Neighborhood

Hampden is located just ten minutes from downtown Baltimore making it a perfect place for commuters to live. Many of the homes are classic two-story brick and stone rowhomes that were built to house the families of the mill workers that were the original settlers of the area. There are a handful of larger homes that were originally built for the more wealthy residents including managers and senior workers of the mills.
