Baltimore's Hampden neighborhood was originally settled by the workers of the flour and cotton mills along Jones Falls long before it officially became part of Baltimore in the late 1800s. Today, Hampden has been transformed into a trendy, attractive place where artists gather, shoppers stroll The Avenue, and friends and family gather.
The Hampden neighborhood is just minutes from the exciting nightlife and after hours entertainment of the Inner Harbor. There's also plenty to keep you busy right at home.
The distinct style and culture that is Hampden is celebrated every June during HonFest, an annual tradition that celebrates the warmth and unique style of the historic working women of Baltimore. The people in the area spend one weekend truly relishing in wild (and lovingly tacky) wardrobes and hairstyles that were popular in the area during the 1960s. There is food and music to enjoy although people-watching is usually the primary activity.
Another notorious festival, Hampdenfest, is held every year in September and is another opportunity for the community to get together and enjoy the unique vibe of Hampden. Along with live music, local art, and microbrew beer, people can enjoy such competitions like the Regional Beard and Mustache Competition and the Toilet Bowl Race.
Hampden is located just ten minutes from downtown Baltimore making it a perfect place for commuters to live. Many of the homes are classic two-story brick and stone rowhomes that were built to house the families of the mill workers that were the original settlers of the area. There are a handful of larger homes that were originally built for the more wealthy residents including managers and senior workers of the mills.
