Lancaster, PA was formed in 1729 from parts of Chester County and named after the county seat of Lancashire, England. It was primarily settled by German and Swiss immigrants, the Amish and Mennonite. Lancaster even played the role of state capital from 1799 until 1812. The major historical significances, refurbished downtown (stop by Central Market), its central geographic location to other areas (with rail and plane accessibility), and the Amish population in the surrounding countryside, have all helped distinguish Lancaster as a major tourist destination.
High tourism to the area has generated a need for places to stay, eat, and visit resulting in the appearance of many charming bed & breakfasts, great hotels, numerous shopping venues and wonderful local eateries. Long’s Park provides outdoor recreation, concerts, and other events throughout the year. From attractions that entertain the young and old to satisfy the interests of history buffs, to daring trend-setters The North Pointe community of Lancaster has got it all!
The turnpike, built in 1795, connected Lancaster to Philadelphia, and brought with it many new residents. Still today, many Philadelphia natives and other large city transplants are happy to call the beautiful, peaceful Lancaster countryside their home--and we are happy to help them realize their dreams! Lancaster’s central location is a great place to live and raise a family, while still being a reasonable commute to other areas. Since 1879, when F.W. Woolworth opened his first store on Lancaster’s Queen Street, many businesses have opened their doors in Lancaster. Armstrong World Industries, Alcoa, Kellogg’s, R.R. Donnelly and Sons, are just a few that provide employment and support area growth. Lancaster is also home to Franklin and Marshall College, Millersville University, and Harrisburg Area Community College--all excellent higher-education establishments. More than just a popular tourist destination, Lancaster is wonderful place to live, learn, work and grow.
