
Chester County, Pennsylvania, is one of the original three counties created by William Penn in 1682. Much of Chester's history was formed around its location between Philadelphia and the Susquehanna River. The Lincoln Highway, which is now known as Route 30, passed through Chester and was the "first road to The West." The Battle of Brandywine was fought at the present day northeastern fringe of the county, and the Valley Forge encampment was constructed at the northeastern edge. The former Valley Forge Army Hospital, built during World War II, was one of the largest military hospitals in the United States. According to 2013 US Census data, Chester County has a population of approximately 509,468.
