Founded in the 1730’s, William Penn dreamed of a diversified colony whose citizens would represent many nationalities and religious faiths. Once a Baptist Pastor, Conrad Beissel, moved to the site upon which Ephrata would be built, where he hoped to live as a religious hermit. As he continued to write and preach, the charismatic Beissel began to draw others attracted by his mystical views. Gradually, both a society and a community began to form. What began as a hermitage for a small group of devoted individuals grew into a thriving community, the Ephrata Cloisters. Years of internal dissension weakened the congregation which lost its charter in 1934. Today the National Historic Landmark is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and open for tours and special programs.
In addition to this large piece of local history, the Ephrata community has much more to offer. On Fridays, stop by Green Dragon, a combination flea market/ farmers market/ auction that has a large variety of items to purchase and good food to savor! Want to have dinner and catch a movie? Do both all in one stop! Check out Lily’s on Main. Over 100 businesses serve the residents who live in and around downtown Ephrata. Housed in historic buildings, dating back generations, they line an early 20th-century streetscape of paved sidewalks, lamp posts, and furling banners. Every fall, our charming, quiet downtown takes on a whole new look, when the Ephrata Fair is in full swing. It is the largest street fair in the Northeast—you won’t want to miss it!
Our Ephrata real estate agents are proud of this charming community nestled amid the farms and rolling hills of Lancaster County. More than just helping to increase the community size, they also participate in many local organizations, helping to increase the community strength. We generously volunteer our time and efforts to charitable groups such as The Sunshine Kids (children fighting cancer), Coats for Kids, Toys for Tots and the Angel Tree.
