Ephrata was home to The Cloisters, a religious community founded by German mystic Conrad Beissel in the early 1700s. In the early 1800s, as The Cloisters community declined, Ephrata’s commercial area grew with two resorts, Mountain Springs and the Mount Vernon House.
The borough was incorporated August 22, 1891.
Ephrata has steadily grown since its founding, making the borough the most populous in Lancaster County. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Ephrata’s population was 13,394. The median income for a household in Ephrata was $41,550, according to the 2000 U.S. Census. The median income for a family was $48,213. The per capita income was $19,659.
Children of Ephrata families attend private or public schools. The Ephrata Area School District has more than 4,243 students. The teacher-student ratio in the district is 18.5, according to the district.
With a passion for preserving the historic charm of Ephrata, the borough features the Ephrata Commercial Historic District, Ephrata Cloister, Eby Shoe Corporation buildings, Connell Mansion, Mentzer Building and Mountain Springs Hotel. Small town Ephrata, nestled in a region of rich farmland, provides residents with cultural arts. The borough is home to the Ephrata Performing Arts Center, the Eicher Arts Center , The Sharadin Bigler Theatre, and The Main Theater.
The Ephrata Performing Arts Center produces and performs high quality entertainment. The Sharadin Bigler Theatre, one of the oldest theaters in Lancaster County, is located on the grounds of the Ephrata Community Park and operated by the Ephrata Performing Arts Center. The Eicher Arts Center, a non-profit organization, oversees the Eichler House and Indian Museum. The Main Theater, which opened in 1938, was purchased by the Denver and Ephrata Telephone Company in 1990. The theater was restored and enhanced to show new movies.
According to borough officials, Ephrata has the largest park system per capita in the state. More than 322 acres of park lands features athletic complexes, three outdoor pools, tennis courts, a band shell, pavilions, archery ranges, fitness courses, nature trails, 16 neighborhood parks, basketball courts and playgrounds.
The Ephrata Area Chamber of Commerce represents a plethora of hotels, bed and breakfasts, retail establishments, industries and professionals. The borough’s first bank, Ephrata National Bank, continues to thrive. The chamber has been serving the area for more than 92 years. It also provides a visitors’ information center.
The borough is home to the Ephrata Fair, the largest street fair in Pennsylvania, started in October 1919. What started as a one-day festival to honor World War I veterans has grown to a five-day event. The September fair attracts tens of thousands.
