Reading is often symbolized by "the Pagoda," a Japanese-style pagoda that overlooks Mount Penn, making is visible from everywhere in town. The Pagoda was built in1908 to be a hotel and restaurant, but was never used as such, though it has been a tourist attraction of Reading.
