There's something special about Pennsylvania Dutch Country in wintertime. Our real estate agents love getting out to explore the snowy landscape this time of year, and we're excited to share some of our favorite winter hiking destinations near Harrisburg homes for sale!
- Lancaster County Central Park - 1050 Rockford Rd., Lancaster, PA 17602
The largest park in Lancaster County, Lancaster County Central Park encompasses 544 acres of picturesque fields and forests. It's a lovely place for a family hike in any season, with over 12 miles of trails open year-round from dawn until dusk. In winter, the Conestoga Trail is a good place to start. Lancaster County Central Park is home to 3.3 miles of this long-distance hiking route, which traverses mostly flat, easy terrain as it crosses Lancaster County, often mere minutes from these Lancaster homes for sale.
- Speedwell Forge County Park - 480 Speedwell Forge Rd., Lititz, PA 17543
A scenic 415-acre park in the heart of Dutch Country, Speedwell Forge County Park is a great place for a quick winter hike. The park is mostly undeveloped except for the trail that winds through its lush woodlands. In springtime, hikers come looking for the first trillium that emerge after the thaw. But in the winter, keep an eye out for deer, foxes, and many species of winter birds that call the park home. Keep in mind that hunting is allowed here during authorized seasons, so be sure to wear blaze orange. The parking area and trailhead are located along Speedwell Forge Road, just minutes from these Lititz homes for sale.
- Heritage Rail Trail - N. Pershing Ave., York, PA 17401
One of the great hiking destinations in York County, the Heritage Rail Trail follows a former railroad line through some of Dutch Country's most charming scenery. The trail's flat grade makes it perfect for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and winter hiking, and it passes through several communities and many miles of serene forests and farmlands along the way. The Heritage Rail Trail begins in the heart of York, PA — footsteps from many York homes for sale — and stretches 22 miles southward to the PA/MD state line.
- Turkey Hill Overlook Trail - 2501 River Rd., Conestoga, PA 17516
One of Southeast Pennsylvania's most picturesque hikes, the Turkey Hill Overlook Trail is a 3.7-mile pathway alongside the Susquehanna River. The Turkey Hill Trail covers mostly easy terrain, meandering through deciduous forest and cresting a small hill with splendid views across the river. Keep an eye out for osprey and bald eagles overhead! The trail departs from the same trailhead as the Enola Trail, and you can utilize portions of both to form a loop hike.
- Appalachian Trail - 400 Reservoir Rd., Hamburg, PA 19526
Pennsylvania is home to 230 miles of the Appalachian Trail, which stretches all the way from Georgia to Maine. Here in PA, this legendary footpath follows the ridges and valleys of the Appalachian Mountains, with dozens of trailheads in and around Dutch Country. The Pinnacle Trailhead just outside Hamburg, PA, is a great place to start, providing access to expansive vistas from Pulpit Rock and the Pinnacle, a stone's throw from these Hamburg homes for sale. Bear in mind that the AT can be challenging at the best of times, especially in winter. This is a hike for experienced winter hikers.
