If you're interested in fascinating African-American history and in the best national heritage sites in all of Maryland, you won't want to miss Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Park. It's found right in historic Fells Point and sits on the water as a defining example of industrial elegance.
The maritime industry has been the beating heart of Baltimore since the very beginning.
The Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Park is a Living Classrooms Foundation campus that celebrates the role African-Americans played in Baltimore's maritime industry. Located on Baltimore's Inner Harbor, the location defines the city's African-American maritime history, while preserving one of the city's oldest existing waterfront industrial buildings.
Frederick Douglass was very well-known as an abolitionist, intellectual, and orator who fought to achieve freedom and suffrage for black people his entire life. Isaac Myers was a larger-than-life-figure in civil rights during the 1800's. After the Civil War upended the job market, he strove to create a co-operative shipyard and railway that transformed Baltimore.
When you visit, you'll have the opportunity to tour the facility with skilled interpreters who'll help you experience the gripping tale of these two courageous men. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with tickets just $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and $2 for kids.
On the third floor, you'll find the Bearman Gallery. This exquisite space features a rotating display of local artists whose works span the whole range of contemporary styles, media, and subjects. Access to the Gallery is included in the price of your general admission ticket.
Interestingly enough, the park is also known as a premier local wedding venue. It accommodates up to 300 guests and includes access to the museum, gallery, and banquet hall area. You'll have plenty of time to luxuriate amidst the waterfront views and appreciate all the many historic touches.
