How did it all begin? Quarryville was officially chartered as a borough in 1892 but its origins go back as far as 1775 and the town was officially named in 1837. There was a stone quarry adjacent to the village where many of the workers lived. This village became larger as the work force grew; hence the town acquired the name Quarryville. The original quarry site remains, now full of water. By 1858 there were a dozen quarries operating in the area. There were no other businesses in Quarryville until 1833 when the Haines store opened. Thus began the expansion and prosperous beginnings of this small town. Many businesses and organizations opened their doors soon after that very first store. It was followed by the Hotel Quarryville in 1847, the first post office was opened in 1849, St. Paul’s Church was dedicated in 1852, and in 1883 Quarryville National Bank opened its doors. It was mainly the construction of the railroad, connecting Quarryville to Lancaster, which deserves the credit for the village’s growth and increase in population.
The quaint feel of this small town still lives on, even in today’s hectic times. Some of the local businesses have managed to maintain their charm in everyday operations. Places like Good’s Store and the local supermarket, Ferguson & Hassler. Good's Store gives you that genuine Pennsylvania Dutch shopping experience complete with friendly service, low prices, and unique merchandise. Good's Store is where locals have been shopping for over 50 years! E. E. Ferguson and George W. Hassler, Sr. opened a grocery store in 1916 that still remains a focal point in southern Lancaster County today. Ferguson & Hassler has evolved into a large supermarket, but is still under the ownership of one of the original families.
Aside from being a charming, the southern Lancaster town of Quarryville is making itself known in bigger, more futuristic ways too. Quarryville has recently become home to the largest solar electric farm on the East Coast. The project, which includes 4,500 solar panels, was erected on 78 acres of local farmland. It produces 15 megawatts of electricity for PPL (enough to power 3,600 to 4,500 homes). Buck Motorsports Park is another entity you may be surprised to find right in the middle of this peaceful, rural locale. It provides an exciting, fun experience, sincere hospitality, and good times in a unique family friendly environment of motor sports entertainment! Come and see what a fun filled Saturday night at The Buck is all about!
