The legacy of Milton Hershey and his chocolate empire extends beyond candy. The Milton Hershey School was established in 1909 by Mr. Milton Hershey and his wife Catherine to assist orphaned boys. Their mission, still true today, is to nurture and educate children in financial and social need. Hershey is also home to the acclaimed Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. This top rated medical center attracts some of the nation’s top talent in the medical field. In 1963, the Milton Hershey Foundation provided funding to this facility to assist in establishing a medical school, teaching hospital, and research center.

In addition to these large endeavors, Milton wanted to make sure that his employees and families were happy and treated fairly. He played a major role in creating our model community by seeing to it that Hershey had churches, parks, recreational facilities and a trolley system. As time went on, he also added a community building, department store, a convention hall, a swimming pool and schools - lots of schools! Many of these still operate today.
