According to the Baltimore City Planning Commission, Mount Vernon is bounded by Eager Street to the north, Jones Falls Expressway to the east, Franklin Street to the south and Eutaw Street to the west.
Mount Vernon is mainly a residential community however it is home to architectural firms, financial institutions, legal offices and medical offices. The community is also home to numerous art galleries, restaurants, pubs, retail stores, hotels, bed and breakfasts, cafes, and more.
The neighborhood was named Mount Vernon because it is the home of the nation’s first and original Washington Monument. Commissioned in 1815, the monument commemorated the young nation’s first president. The monument is 176 feet high.
Extending outward from the Washington Monument is a wealth of cultural amenities. Some of the local institutions include the Enoch Pratt Free Library, Lyric Opera House, Center State, Baltimore School for the Arts, the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, Walters Art Museum, University of Baltimore, Maryland Historical Society, Contemporary Museum, Maryland Institute College of Art, and the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall.
Organizations such as Center Stage, the Baltimore School for the Arts, the Maryland Historical Society, the Enoch Pratt Free Library, the Walters Art Museum and others, formed the Mount Vernon Cultural District. This group preserves the neighborhood of Mount Vernon by promoting the area, attracting businesses and investing in the infrastructure.
The homes in Mount Vernon include beautiful row houses and converted older buildings, such as the Belvedere Hotel which is now divided into condominiums. The Stafford Hotel, built in 1894, is an apartment building for Johns Hopkins University students. The home of Henry and Williams Walters is now the office of the Walters Art Museum.
Residents of Mount Vernon enjoy a sense of community and a sense of family. They call Mount Vernon an ideal place to raise children, calling it a child-friendly neighborhood. Mount Vernon is home to the Mount Vernon Children’s Park. Built by community members, foundations, city departments, and businesses, the park features a spray park, a sand box, a hedge maze and more.

Many children in Mount Vernon attend the Wilkes School at Grace and St. Peters School, one of the top private schools in Baltimore. Also located in Mount Vernon is the Baltimore School for the Arts. Students are admitted based on auditions. Ranked one of the top five performing arts high schools in the nation, the high school’s curriculum includes visual arts, music, theatre and dance in addition to college preparatory studies. More than 400 students are enrolled at the Baltimore School for the Arts.
