History

Central to Millersville, Maryland, is the Childs Residence, the home of George Miller and the Millersville Store and Post Office. This historic home served as a post office for more than 130 years. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Childs Residence is home to the Anne Arundel County Trails program.

Millersville Schools

The majority of students in Millersville attend Anne Arundel County Public Schools. The district is headquartered near Annapolis, the county seat and the state capital. Anne Arundel County Public Schools is the fifth largest school district in Maryland and the 46th largest in the United States. The district employs more than 5,000 teachers.

High school students in Millersville attend Old Mill Senior High. Known for a high standard of academics, Old Mill Senior High is one of three Anne Arundel County Public Schools offering IB World Schools in the county. In addition to excellent academics, the high school has recently won two state football championships, as well as placed well in track and field, basketball and wrestling. In 2007 Old Mill High School was ranked by Newsweek magazine as one of the top 1,300 public high schools in the nation.

There are several private school options to Millersville residents. Elvaton Christian Academy, Rockbridge Academy, and the Olde Mill Christian Academy are nearby.

For higher educational opportunities, Anne Arundel Community College is in the nearby town of Arnold, Maryland.

Recreation and Entertainment

The Anne Arundel County Parks and Recreation division maintains an extensive park system, utilizing the area’s rich natural resources. The parks department offers a wide variety of activities but also maintains sports facilities, community parks, and archaeological and historical preserves. The county operates the Baltimore and Annapolis Trail, Downs Park, Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary, Kinder Farm Park and Quiet Waters Park, all very large facilities.

The Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, one of only 17 U.S. Geological Survey operated centers is located on the 12,841-acre Patuxent Research Refuge in Anne Arundel County. This is the only national wildlife refuge managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services that supports wildlife research. The Patuxent Wildlife Research Center has been an international leader for wildlife and environmental research and sharing data and technical assistance for wildlife and natural resource managers.

The county is home to the Maryland Renaissance Festival, the Maryland State House and Colonial Annapolis Historic District, all which attract visitors to the area.

According to county officials, Anne Arundel is home to Maryland’s two largest shopping malls, Westfield Annapolis Mall and Arundel Mills. Near Arundel Mills is the Maryland Live! Casino.

The median income for an Anne Arundel County household was $61,768. The median income for an Anne Arundel County family was $69,019, according to 2000 U.S. Census data. Census estimates in 2007 calculate the county household income has increased to $79,294 and the median income for an Anne Arundel family was $91,071. The per capita income was $27,578.
