Lititz, PA Real Estate and Homes for Sale

Lititz Overview

Lititz, Pennsylvania was voted  “America's Coolest Small Town.” Out of 942 towns in America, Lititz gained its title with nearly 100,000 votes cast online when Budget Travel told online voters to consider small towns with the best local independent shops, sense of energy, community culture, epic backyard, heart, edginess and access to delicious coffee. It's no surprise that this historic, high energy and edgy borough of 9,400 people (2012 US Census), not even ten miles north of Lancaster in Pennsylvania Dutch Country, took the title.

Lititz PA Real Estate Information

Lititz remains known for its historic flavor. Fully one-third of its homeowners are lured by the charm of log, brick and stone homes from the 1930s and older with a mix of Victorian, Brit and Deutsch architecture. In addition, this picturesque town is also teeming with art galleries, trendy boutiques, antiques shops, historic inns, tearooms, pubs and colorful retro cafes. And how “cool” is this:  Two rock 'n roll businesses include Clair Brothers, renowned sound company, and Tait Towers, a concert set production firm and the Zombie Run wends through town mid-October.

Lititiz' median home value is $160,000 and although more than two-thirds of homeowners appreciate living in older, historic homes, a good one-third of homeowners have moved into the highest appreciating new neighborhoods (1990-present) including Brickersville, Borough Center, Lititz Pike, Lexington/Halfsville, Rothsville and Brunnerville/Millway

History of Lititz

In 1756, Moravian Count Zinzendorf named the settlement Litiz, in commemoration of the Bohemian castle Lidice nad Citadelou. Lititz' history is not only tied to the Moravian faith in Bohemia due to its naming, but also because for a century, only Moravians were permitted to live in Lititz. Until the middle of the 19th century, only members of the congregation could be homeowners; others were required to lease. Today, the Moravian star still hangs from hotel porches, store windows, homes and churches.  The majority of the homes and buildings in the town center date back to this era and have been historically restored. Lititz is also home to Linden Hall School, the oldest all-girls boarding school in the United States founded by the Moravians, of course, in 1746.

Things to Do in Lititz PA

Vibrant downtown Lititz hosts nearly 50 shops, more than 20 restaurants and cafes, dozens of historic buildings (many housing specialty museums and kid-firendly activities), and the renowned Lititz Springs Park, all within just a few blocks. The Wilbur Chocolate Company's Candy Americana museum and the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery (America's first sinced 1861) where you can twist your own pretzels. The Lititz Farmers Market is open on Saturdays mid-May to mid-October. Every Second Friday, local merchants stay open late.

Lititz Independence Day festival has been running since 1813, one of the oldest community-wide observances in the U.S., decorated with wooden beams and trestles fitted with white candles placed from side to side of the stone-walled stream and stretching nearly throughout the entire length of Lititz Spring Park. The trestles are fitted sockets for white candles to be placed and lit during the celebration. Lititz Springs Park is owned by the Lititz Moravian Congregation and maintained by the Churches of Lititz, for public use. The springs brought Nanticoke Indians to the area. Spearheads have been found nearby, dating back to perhaps 6,000 B.C.

Living in Lititz PA

For small towns, Lititiz is rated high for its abundance of local amenities, stable housing market and high graduation rates.  It's home to small independent businesses as well as internationally known companies such as Atomic Design, Clair Global, Johnson & Johnson, Susquehanna Bancshares, Tait Towers, Wilbur Chocolate, and Woodstream. Many Lititz homeowners attest that it's a wonderful place to raise a family, tucked away from major highways and urban congestion, yet close enough to Baltimore and Philadelphia to make an easy day trip.
