Glen Burnie’s foundation was laid in 1812 when Elias Glenn, a local district attorney, established a county seat and named the property Glennsburne. Through the years the ownership of the property was passed through Glenn’s descendants. As the ownership of the area of what we know today as Glen Burnie changed so did its name: first, Glennsbourne Farm and then Glenburnie.
William Wilkins Glenn, Elias Glenn's grandson, incorporated the Curtis Creek Mining, Furnace and Manufacturing Company into his family's property in 1854. Upon William’s death, his family members assumed management of his business matters. Eventually, Glenburnie became an official state subdivision in 1888. Not until 1930 when postmaster Louis J. DeAlba divided the the Glenburnie name into two words did the town’s final name change occur making it today’s Glen Burnie.
While defense technology is a major source of employment in Glen Burnie, residents may boast their real claim is fame as having built Harundale Mall, the first enclosed shopping mall located on the East Coast opened in 1958.
