Minutes from Gettysburg, Fairfield was the site of an American Civil War battle. The Battle of Fairfield was key to securing the Fairfield pass and the Hagerstown Road. This permitted Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia to retreat through Fairfield to the Potomac River.

Union casualties were treated in the Fairfield homes of Sarah Amanda Blythe and Rufus Christian Swope and what is today the St. John’s Lutheran Church.

The Fairfield Inn has the distinction of being one of only five of America’s oldest continuously operating inns and taverns. Lee, General J.E.B. Stuart and the Eisenhowers have been guests at the Fairfield Inn. Today, the Fairfield Inn offers individually decorated guest rooms, fine foods and drinks.

The Fairfield Historic District and the Fairfield Inn are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
