Employment and Economy

Companies, including Continental Press; animal feed plant White Oak Mills; and Masterfoods USA, a division of Mars, are located in Elizabethtown. The Masonic Village and Messick’s Farm and Construction Equipment are also based in the borough. The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections Training Academy is nearby in Mount Joy, outside Elizabethtown.

Recreation and Entertainment

Residents in Elizabethtown enjoy two parks, the Community Park and Hickory Lane Park. Community Park has basketball courts, a baseball field, a play fort and playground, and an amphitheater. Hickory Lane Park is a natural park.

The borough has received several state and federal grants for construction of a pedestrian and bicycle pathway. The path moves east from Market Street, through Community Park to the Elizabethtown Area School District.

The Greater Elizabethtown Area Recreation Services provides residents with multiple activities, including trips, sports leagues for baseball, softball and basketball players. The recreation services run the Elizabethtown Area Senior Center.

Schools

Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, offers high quality education to residents. Public school students attend the Elizabethtown Area School District. Elizabethtown College, a small comprehensive college, also known as E-town, was founded by members of the Church of the Brethren in 1899. Approximately 2,000 students attend Elizabethtown College.

History

Founded in 1753, Elizabethtown was founded by Captain Barnabas Hughes. He purchased the land and platted the Elizabethtown real estate for sale. Local legend says he named the town after his wife, Elizabeth.

The borough was established in 1827. The Klein Chocolate Company, now a part of Mars, Inc., set up shop in the early 1900s. Elizabethtown became home to several shoe manufacturing companies, including the Kreider Shoe Manufacturing Company. The Kreider Shoe Manufacturing Company property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
