The population of Dover is 2,007, according to the 2010 U.S. Census. There were 770 households in Dover and more than 30 percent of those households had children under the age of 18. The public school students in Dover attend the Dover Area School District.
Just seven miles south of York and 25 miles north of Harrisburg, is Dover, Pennsylvania. Because Dover is basically a bedroom community, many residents work in York County. In addition to a large agricultural base, York County Is home to major manufacturers including Harley Davidson, York Barbell, York International, Utz Quality Foods, Snyder’s of Hanover and Voith Hydro. York County is central to major metropolitan areas including Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Washington DC. The median income in the borough of Dover was $41,250, according to the 2010 U.S. Census. The median income for a family was $46,086. The per capita income was $19,108.
The borough of Dover was settled because of its central location to York and Carlisle. In 1764, Gerhart Graff opened a public house on the road between York and Carlisle. The same year, Jacob Joner purchased 203 acres of land from Nicholas Joner and the town was platted. According to the historical society in Dover, homes for sale and Dover real estate for sale were offered. Homes and businesses were built around Graff’s public house. Dover was incorporated as a borough in 1864.
Dover was occupied by Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart for one night, June 30 through July 1, 1863, during the Gettysburg Campaign of the American Civil War.
The Englehart Melchinger House in Dover is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The restored home was built by businessman Englehart Melchinger, the son of Israel Melchinger, a Hessian soldier during the American Revolutionary War. Israel Melchinger did not return to Germany after he fought in the American Revolution. Instead he made his home in Dover, Pennsylvania. The Englehart Melchinger home is located at 5 Main Street (PA State Route 74).
Dover’s history continues as it continues to grow. In 1965, more than 76 acres was annexed to the borough. According to York County officials, each of the county’s boroughs, including Dover, is unique and beautiful.
